One of the most common questions I get from seniors (and their moms) is simple:

“What should I wear for my senior pictures?”

If you’re a high school senior in Cedar Rapids, Marion, Central City, or anywhere in Eastern Iowa, don’t worry. You don’t need to be a fashion expert to have senior photos you love.

As a senior photographer serving Cedar Rapids, Marion, Central City, and the surrounding Eastern Iowa area, outfit planning is one of the things I help seniors with most.

My job is to guide you through the process so your outfits feel like you, photograph beautifully, and work well with your location.

Quick Senior Outfit Tips

If you’re short on time, here are the biggest things to remember:

• Bring 2–3 outfits

• Choose clothes you can move comfortably in

• Stick with neutral or earthy colors

• Bring one outfit you feel confident in

• Don’t forget about shoes and simple accessories

Now let’s break those down a little more.

Start With 2-3 Outfits

You don’t need a suitcase full of clothes.

For most senior sessions, two or three outfits is perfect. It gives us variety without spending your entire session changing clothes.

A simple formula that works well is:

• One casual outfit

• One dressier outfit

• One outfit that really shows your personality

This gives you a great mix of images in your final gallery.

Choose Clothes You Can Move In

This is a big one.

During your senior session, I’ll guide you through natural movement and poses like sitting, walking, leaning, and turning.

Because of that, I always tell seniors:

Choose outfits you can comfortably move in.

If something is super short, tight, or constantly needs adjusting, it can make posing harder and distract from the experience.

The goal is for you to feel relaxed and confident, not worried about your outfit.

Pick Colors That Photograph Well

Certain colors photograph beautifully outdoors and in natural light.

Some colors that tend to work well in Eastern Iowa locations like Noelridge Park, downtown Cedar Rapids, and Uptown Marion include:

• Soft neutrals

• Earth tones

• Denim

• Muted blues and greens

• Creams and warm browns

Try to avoid super bright neon colors or large distracting graphics. Those can pull attention away from you.

Bring One Outfit You Feel Amazing In

Every senior should bring at least one outfit that feels like their confidence outfit.

Maybe it’s a dress you love.

Maybe it’s your favorite jeans and boots.

Maybe it’s something a little more styled.

If you feel good in it, it will show in your photos.

Those images often end up being favorites.

Think About Shoes

Shoes are one of the most overlooked parts of senior outfits, but they can completely change the vibe of a photo.

A few options that work well are:

• Casual sneakers

• Boots

• Sandals

• Dress shoes or heels

If we’re walking through parks or fields around Cedar Rapids or Marion, bringing a pair of comfortable shoes between locations can also help.

Simple Accessories Can Elevate An Outfit

Accessories can add personality and variety without needing extra outfits.

Some ideas include:

• A favorite hat

• Simple jewelry

• A jean jacket or cardigan

• A blanket for sitting photos

• Something connected to your hobbies or activities

Small details like these can make your session feel more personal.
